If you can only attend one agility workshop in the coming months – or are new to the sport – then this workshop is for you! This workshop is all 14242335_10153895038822965_2919323349457699587_oabout building and growing the relationship between the agility handler and their dog.

Many of the “problem behaviours” agility handlers encounter with their dogs has little to do with obstacles themselves, but rather what happens before, between, and after obstacles. Behaviours like sniffing the ground, hunting for dropped treats, jumping up/nipping, broken start lines, slow speed on course, stealing toys/food, running off to visit “friends”, going off course to take favourite pieces of equipment, hiding in/under obstacles to escape the heat/rain, and refusing to leave/slow off the start line are just some of the struggles every handler will encounter at one time or another.

In this workshop we will discuss:

  • How to engage your dog appropriately in order to gain handler focus and increase speed on course.
  • Start-line handling, the choices, and how to make the right one for you and your dog.
  • How to use food and toy rewards appropriately, and why the timing of delivery is so important.
  • Impulse control, distractions, and how to overcome “naughty dog” behaviours.
  • How to set your dog up for success when training new or difficult behaviours.
  • How to test understanding, work through distractions, and how to overcome failures. (FYI, we L-O-V-E failures and we are excited to show you why you should too!)

Note: Specific obstacles performance problems (i.e. missed contacts, skipped/popped weave poles) will not be discussed during this workshop, however, many of the training methods/exercises can be utilized to correct those problems.
